Cheesesteak Casserole

Cheesesteak Casserole is a hearty, comforting dish that combines the beloved flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak with the homey feel of a baked casserole. This dish is known for its rich layers of flavor and satisfying texture, making it a favorite for family dinners or gatherings where a filling, indulgent meal is desired.

The foundation of a cheesesteak casserole is thinly sliced beef, typically a ribeye or sirloin, chosen for its tenderness and flavor. This beef is sautéed until browned and tender, often alongside sliced onions and bell peppers, which caramelize and add a sweet, slightly charred taste that’s quintessential to a cheesesteak. Some versions also include mushrooms for an earthy depth.

The sautéed beef and vegetables are then layered in a baking dish. The next crucial component is the cheese – a defining feature of any cheesesteak. Provolone is a popular choice for its smooth melt and mild flavor, but other varieties like American cheese, cheddar, or a blend of cheeses are also used for different flavor profiles. The cheese may be layered with the meat or melted into a creamy cheese sauce that’s poured over the beef and vegetables, enveloping them in a rich, gooey layer.

To add a casserole element, many recipes incorporate a carbohydrate base or topping. This could be a layer of cooked pasta, like penne or rotini, or sliced potatoes. Alternatively, a topping of biscuit dough or crescent roll pastry is added for a golden, fluffy crust that bakes up in the oven.

Seasonings like garlic, salt, pepper, and sometimes Worcestershire sauce or steak seasoning are added to enhance the meaty flavors. The entire casserole is then baked until the cheese is bubbly and the top is golden brown, creating a beautiful crust.

Upon serving, Cheesesteak Casserole offers a symphony of textures and flavors – the tender, savory beef, the sweet and soft onions and peppers, the creamy, melted cheese, and the contrasting base or crust. It’s a dish that feels both familiar and exciting, combining the beloved elements of a classic sandwich with the comforting nature of a baked casserole. Perfect for a cozy night in or for impressing guests, it’s a modern take on comfort food that pays homage to the flavors of Philadelphia.
